Work Permit

Work permits for foreign citizens are issued by the Employment Service Agency of the Republic of Macedonia. Applications for a work permit should be submitted to the Employment Service Agency. Work permits are valid for a period between three months and one year, and are renewable. This procedure is conducted in the Employment Service Agency of the Republic of Macedonia completely free of charge.

Residence Permit

Residence permits for foreign citizens are issued by the Department for Foreign Citizens in the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Republic of Macedonia. The foreign citizen may establish employment if he/she has approval for a temporary stay in the Republic of Macedonia and if he/she gets an employment approval. Residence permits are issued to foreign citizens who are deemed to be in the Republic of Macedonia on a permanent basis. Individuals are considered to be present on a permanent basis if they have stayed in the Republic of Macedonia continuously for at least three years .

Applications for a temporary residence permit should be submitted to the Department for Foreign Citizens and Migration Issues in the Ministry of Internal Affairs, and should include details on the reasons for seeking a permit together with proof that the individual has sufficient resources to live on. The residence permit is registered in an individual’s passport.

A foreign citizen with a residence permit in the Republic of Macedonia may be given a work permit for a period no longer than the period of validity of the residence permit.

Along with the application for temporary residence, the foreign citizen is obliged to submit evidence for the reason for applying, as well as evidence for financial sources provided for the stay.

The Employment Service Agency issues approval for employment of the foreign citizen, and only then, the foreign citizen submits an "Application for Temporary Residence" to the Ministry of Internal Affairs.

The temporary residence permit is issued for a period of one year, i.e. until the expiration date of the travel document, if the expiration date is less than one year. The permit for temporary stay may be extended, but only up to one year, upon submission of an application by the foreign citizen before the expiration of the current temporary residence permit.
